About the Author
A pre-eminent American poet, John Hollander has written over sixteen volumes of poetry. He has also published several works of literary criticism and has edited numerous anthologies, including the Oxford Anthology of English Literature. His many honours include the Bollingen Prize, the Levinson Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. Rhyme's Reason won the Mina P. Suaughnessy Award from the Modern Language Association when it was first published. John Hollander is currently Sterling Professor of English at Yale University.

Playful, smart inspiration for writers of formal poetry

This little volume is the single most useful book on formal poetry I've ever owned. It explains the history and the rules of pretty much every verse form there is, with examples that make me want to run for my notebook to start playing with them myself. If you love formal poetry, you must own this book. (And if you don't, maybe it will change your mind...)

Not particularly useful

Bit too witty to learn anything. The author is too busy being cute to explain anything very well. Also, only marking stressed syllables only does half of the job of scansion; marking both stressed and unstressed syllables provides a complete visual aid for discerning meter. Add to that the author's party-line views on free verse and you have a rather lame book. Consider this a book-length version of Coleridge's horrible little piece on meter. Timothy Steele's All the Fun's in how you Say a Thing is much better.

Unique and A Fun Way To Learn About Poetry Technique

This is a really unique little book. The author uses verse to teach about various forms of verse. So, instead of writing paragraphs upon paragraphs of explanation about accentual-syllabic verse, quatrains, iambic pentameter, etc, he tends to demonstrate it. He writes about verse in verse.

For example:

"Haiku, with seven
Syllables in between two
Shorter lines of five,"

Another example:

"Cinquains
Have lines of four
Syllable, six, and eight
Ending, as starting, with a line
Of two,"

And another example:

"A true Spenserian stanza wakes up well
With what will seem a quatrain first; in time
The third line rings its 'a' rhyme like a bell
The fourth, it's 'b; resounding like a dime..."

Some of the content of the book is "above my head" in terms of its technical detail about verse. And I'm not sure whether I'll really remember the hardest parts. However, John Hollander has done a fantastic job in making such difficult content digestible. I think anyone who is giving a serious try at studying or writing poetry should read this book.

This book could not be more thorough. I am an art student studying Hiroshi's work and I am glad that I have a book that I can rely on.

The text is in both Japanese and English. Reproductions of the work are gorgeous - all high res and beautifully printed. The book begins with a few writings about the artist by colleagues and family, followed by his entire collection of prints and paintings in chronological order complete with titles, dates and dimensions. Notable pieces are accompanied by brief descriptions.

Appendices include a documentation of his personal history from birth to death, which includes his exhibitions, travel destinations, thumbnail images of his work, travel photography etc. In the back is a catalogue of all his works, a bibliography, and a list of his works in public collections.

AND for the cherry on top, there is a detailed step-by-step description - with corresponding photographs - of Hiroshi's printing process.

Really couldn't ask for more. Thank you for an outstanding book that is great for both reference and enjoyment.

Quality book - worth the expense

Fantastic book! I discovered Yoshida's work completely by accident & was immediately taken with it. Pinned a bunch of his work on Pinterest, then discovered this book. Took a chance on it & it turns out to be worth every penny. Beautiful reproductions of his prints, many taking up a whole page. Text in the book is in both Japanese & English - I appreciate being able to read weekdays in the book. It's not overly text heavy though; the majority of the book is artwork. In the back is a detailed look at the woodcut print process, which is fascinating.

If you appreciate Yoshida's work, or Japanese woodcut printing in general, this is well worth the expense.

As a resource for printmakers, or anyone interested in printmaking, this book fulfils all my criteria. No need to read the text, although the story of his life and work practices is interesting, all the information I need to be enthralled, delighted, inspired and overwhelmed is contained in the beautiful reproductions of his works. This is a sumptuous book that I can only look at for awhile before I have to rush off and do some printmaking. Highly recommended and greatly treasured by me.

The ultimate HTML reference

This book has become my go-to reference for anything HTML. Why do I like this book so much? Let me count the ways:

(1) Every HTML tag past and present is covered in this book.
(2) Each tag description is covered by telling you the proper open and closing tag, and available parameters;
(3) An example HTML segment is given on how it's used;
(4) Whether this is still valid HTML or an old, deprecated tag;
(5) A brief text description on what the tag is used for, and when you should use it;
(6) Browser support for the tag, with four browsers covered: IE, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. What version of the browser supports the tag, and its compatibility with past browsers. No other HTML reference that I know has this.
(7) An index of each tag for quick look up.
(8) A table of contents in logical segments: HTML Concepts, Structural Elements, Head Elements, List Elements, Text Formatting Elements, Form Elements, Image & Media Elements, Table Elements, Frame & Window Elements, Common Attributes with three appendixes: Deprecated Elements, Proprietary & Nonstandard Elements, and an Alphabetic Element Index.

Now, to the aesthetics. The book is gorgeous. Type is well spaced, large, and laid out beautifully. Each tag is laid out in the same format with shaded areas for quick reference. And the piece-de-resistance, this is a hard-backed book, so when you pull it out of the bookshelf it feels solid and nice in your hand, not like a floppy fish you get with the soft covered tombs.

What this book is not. A text on learning HTML. This is not a step-by-step guide. It is a beautiful dictionary for fast look up of HTML tags when your not sure of allowed options, format, whether it is a supported tag, or what browsers are supported.

Five Stars for exactly what it is, "The Ultimate HTML Reference."

I like this book a lot. My only criticism is that it seems padded out some, because much material is repeated, exactly verbatim, for a series of related tags. That's not totally negative, because the material is all there when you look up a tag. But it could have been organized better.

I had this book in my library for a few years. It was a great source and learning tool when I needed to solution to the problem at hand. If you're one to collect and build physical libraries for your office, it's a good one to have.

Mel Robbins is an award-winning CNN on-air commentator and op-ed writer, a contributing editor to SUCCESS Magazine, best-selling author and one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in America.� She began her career as a criminal defense attorney in New York City, then launched and sold several companies and hosted TV and radio programs for A&E, FOX, Cox Media, and CNN.�

we may not feel like doing it

When there's something tough and out of the ordinary to do, we may not feel like doing it. We never feel like it. It's too difficult, too much, too whatever. Mel Robbins understands this and her 5 Second Rule has been an exciting metacognitive tool that I have been using for months now. Ok. I've dabbled, used it in many situations to great effect, and I've lapsed into old habits too. Like any skill, it takes practice. But, 5-4-3-2-1, I'm really working this rule now! I've wrestled with clinical levels of anxiety and depression for years and this concept has really helped me to reframe my anxious hesitation from neurotic roadblock to normal neurofunctioning. Oh, and by the way, I'm in the book on page 178. Thanks again Mel!!! Keep on keepin' on! #5SecondRule

The 5-Second rule was the catalyst that has helped me change my life. That may sound grandiose, but by using the rule, it makes you take action before your mind takes over and stops you from doing the things you are perfectly capable of doing. Mel has put together a system, and a book now, that really gives you a simple concept, that is easy to implement, and will give you immediate results. Read the book, put the 5-second rule to use, and change your life! Enjoy!

Great theory and full of fluff.

I love the concept of this book. However, it's a very simple idea that was crazy fluffed. Count down from 5 and do something to help you reach your goals. There were tons of testimonials and personal stories, while they drove home the authors points, it also got very tiring. Her point was made without 75% of the material. Again, great concept...great thought, and great book...just too long for the actual message it conveys. Skimming material at best.
