THE Book on Observable Phenomena!

Although written in Canadian English, this publication is a beautifully worded resource for explaining observable phenomena, whether it's rainbows, eclipses or nebulae, etc. I love this book, and I especially look forward to next year's edition (2017), which will include details about the Great American Eclipse of August 21st.

This is the second year I have purchased the current RASC Observer's Handbook. It has been and remains one of the best reference books for amateur astronomy in North America. ADAM His Name Means “Of the Ground” His Work: Until his sin, Adam was naked and was the happy caretaker of the Garden of Eden. After succumbing to temptation, he tailored his own clothes and became a farmer. His Character: The first man, Adam, was initially God’s perfect human creation. Adam was in harmony with nature and with his wife, who was formed from one of his ribs. His Sorrow: More tragic than any story in the Bible, Adam disobeyed God, was expelled from the Garden of Eden, and spent the rest of his life in hard labor. His Triumph: Adam was the firstborn of all creation. Key Scriptures: Genesis 2–3 Monday HIS STORY “ What’s that sound?” The tension in Eve’s voice reflected the new feelings in Adam’s gut. His mind and heart swirled with sickening sen-sations, ones he wished he had never experienced, born of deepest guilt and the terror of truth. Until this moment, his life had been filled with remarkable delight. It all began when Adam took his first breath. The span of time between morning consciousness and gathering enough energy to open one’s eyes usually takes just a few moments. But for Adam, the prewaking experience of semiconsciousness must have taken some time. This was unlike anything that had ever happened before—or has happened since: a full-grown man literally sucking in his first gulp of air. As he lay somewhere between sleep and full consciousness, Adam’s first thoughts must have been, Who am I? What are those sounds? Where am I? What is this? Brushing the sleep from his eyes, accepting life, Adam slowly sat up. He looked down at his own legs and arms and saw smooth skin and firm, strong muscles. He lifted his hands to his face, bending and stretching his fingers, studying the sinews. He drew his hands closer and touched his face, feeling the contours of his eyes and cheekbones, then briefly to his hair, thick and long. Adam slowly stood to his feet. He tightened the muscles of his legs and stretched his new arms skyward. He drew in a deep breath of fresh, cool air that would rival a pristine, deep forest breath. And it was only then that Adam saw something of the breathtaking beauty that surrounded him. The foliage was lush, the flowers a panoply of color. The fully orchestrated sounds of songbirds and animals filled his head with sheer ecstasy. I am alive. He took another deep breath. Life is good. Adam began to walk. Slowly at first, then a jog, finally a dead run. Like a child turned loose, the man finally pulled up and spun around, his arms spread wide. He sang and shouted sounds from his own mouth, something he had never heard before. And if the sounds and the beauty and the wind tousling his hair were not enough to flood his senses, Adam felt an indescribable Presence. Yes, there were lots of living things around him, but this was different— an inexpressible Someone. All about him. Over there . . . over there . . . and over there. Whoever it was, Adam inherently knew that he was not the only one in the garden. Yet he was not afraid; instead, he was comforted by the Presence. Adam stopped in a small meadow, the soft grass cushioning his feet. The glowing yellow sun in the sky warmed his shoulders. He looked at the trees surrounding him and felt a vague emptiness in the pit of his stomach. And then, for the first time, Adam heard a voice, a sound different from the sound of any of the other living things around him. He heard words—a language that took shape and became immediate knowledge in his mind. The voice was quiet and authoritative, and he recognized it as belonging to the Presence. “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden,” the voice said, “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Adam nodded his willing compliance. He had noted again the tree to his left and decided he was more than willing to obey. With all of this, he thought, looking all about, why would I miss the fruit of that tree? It’s an easy promise. Walking to a small bush covered with red fruit, Adam pulled a berry from a reluctant stem and tentatively bit into it. Juice covered his tongue and ran down his throat, tickling his mouth with a delightful sweet-tart sensation. Eagerly, he gathered others and shoved them into his mouth. Then from the woods and skies, animals and birds approached him. As though mysteriously commanded to organize, these living things passed by, and group by group, Adam called out their names. And once they were named, they scattered again. If ever a man experienced satisfaction by his surroundings, it was Adam. There was the invisible Presence, the creatures, the vegetation, and the fruit. But they weren’t enough. Deep in his soul, Adam longed for something—or someone—else by his side. “It is not good for you to be alone,” the voice spoke again. “I will make a helper suitable for you.” Adam sat down. The words warmed him. He knew that the Presence understood his longing. First a drowsiness, then a complete fatigue overwhelmed Adam. He laid his head on the soft grass and closed his eyes. In what seemed like a moment, he slowly opened his eyes, snatching consciousness from the mist of sleep. As his eyes took focus, he saw a form lying on the ground next to him. His heart raced at the beauty of the creature, like him in some ways, different in delightful other ways. Rising to his feet, Adam took the hand of the woman, helping her to stand. Their eyes met. They smiled and gently extended their arms toward each other until they embraced. Feeling the warmth of her body against his own, Adam nestled his face on the woman’s neck. And her presence filled the hollowness in his heart. A perfect companion.

Man's suffering for God's glory

WOW!
Here is a book that allows one to see how God can use anyone to do His work or pave His way. Having learned about these men as a child, Men of the Bible, allowed me to further relate to their sufferings and blessings. Men have been struggling with the same issues for centuries. What was their response to suffering and how their action plans all have allowed me to evaluate where I need to be as a follower of Christ.

Highly recommend this book to any men's group that wants to take a look at the lessons we all can learn from a wide range of men in the Bible. A good tool to help you use the Bible

I purchased this book for my husband, who is a new Christian. He is not very familiar with the Bible and found the idea of reading the Bible very daunting. I've had this book's counter part, "Women of the Bible" for a long time and have really enjoyed it. My husband loves Men of the Bible, he has found it very helpful in helping him understand the Bible and how it relates to our everyday life. This is a great devotional tool.

Ms. Palana takes a daunting task and makes it fun! The advice in this e-book is practical and down-to-earth, very reader-friendly. I had already written the text for my current campaign, but after reading Crowdfunding Confidential: Raise Money For You & Your Cause, I saw what needed editing out and what needed more emphasis to improve my chances for success. Most importantly, this book gave me the confidence - after a very unsuccessful campaign I tried previously - to try again. I cannot thank the author enough for this very essential guide!

I highly recommend this book

I highly recommend this book! This book is packed full of useful information and so easy to follow. It covers how to break your fundraising project into small, manageable steps, how to write the text of your campaign, how to make your campaign visually appealing, tools and platforms to use to raise money, how to start/continue/re-start the momentum of your project, and so much more. I immediately told my childhood friend about this book because she is trying to raise money to cover medical expenses for a special needs family member.

Amazing book with great tips for raising money! I have been doing the same annual walk for the past 6 years, raising donations along the way. I raised more money this year than I ever have in years past using the tools outlined by Kristen Palana in this easy-to-follow guide! She uses a conversational tone in her writing which makes this seemingly daunting subject a lot less overwhelming. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to raise money for a cause that is close to your heart!

About the Author
Richard W. Bulliet (PhD, Harvard University) is Professor of Middle Eastern History at Columbia University. He has written scholarly works on a number of topics: the social and economic history of medieval Iran (THE PATRICIANS OF NISHAPUR and COTTON, CLIMATE, AND CAMELS IN EARLY ISLAMIC IRAN), the history of human-animal relations (THE CAMEL AND THE WHEEL and HUNTERS, HERDERS, AND HAMBURGERS), the process of conversion to Islam (CONVERSION TO ISLAM IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD), and the overall course of Islamic social history (ISLAM: THE VIEW FROM THE EDGE and THE CASE FOR ISLAMO-CHRISTIAN CIVILIZATION). He is the editor of the COLUMBIA HISTORY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. He has published four novels, coedited THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST, and hosted an educational television series on the Middle East. Steven W. Hirsch holds a Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University and is currently Associate Professor of Classics and History at Tufts University. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Massachusetts Foundation for Humanities and Public Policy. His research and publications include THE FRIENDSHIP OF THE BARBARIANS: XENOPHON AND THE PERSIAN EMPIRE, as well as articles and reviews in the CLASSICAL JOURNAL, the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHILOLOGY, and the JOURNAL OF INTERDISCIPLINARY HISTORY. He is currently working on a comparative study of ancient Mediterranean and Chinese civilizations.

Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Lyman L. Johnson earned his Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of Connecticut. A two-time Senior Fulbright-Hays Lecturer, he also has received fellowships from the Tinker Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society. This book has caused me great suffering.

I am a sophomore in highschool taking an AP class with this book. It has a lot of information, which I guess is a good thing if you are reading this for your own personal gain rather than being tested on it. However, it is so dense that it is difficult to pick up key ideas. Every piece of information is important on some level, and the tests I take, which my teacher got along with this book, also treat every fact as important. I wouldn't mind reading this book if I wasn't expected to have a photographic memory but it just doesn't do a good job of helping me understand key ideas in history. Well, if you have to read this in your history class I hope you have a good teacher to guide you along in the reading. Otherwise.... I hope your memory is better than mine!!

The earth and its people: a global history

Excellent book for senior high school-college-undergraduate studies, covering the broad field of world history. The text is structured in such a manner as to suit both brief studies of various areas and times, as well as more in depth, long term programs. A fascinating assortment of primary source excerpts have been included, from earliest human societies to issues facing humanity in the contemporary period. Though the text has a slight Western emphasis, it covers non-Western civilisations quite well.
Be prepared though for extensive reading. The complete set is very large, but shouldn't be an obstacle for those with a passion for both general and obscure history!

Stage Meets Page ....

Sarah Kay's performance of "B" during her 2011 TedTalk brought down the house. I wasn't there, but, having watched the video any number of times, I have been consisently thrilled by her poetry, presence, and exuberant energy. This is a video I have shared via links with many people over the past year.

But ... I am a man with a heart rooted in "page poetry", and videos are not books, and videos make poor gifts for dear friends. So, how overjoyed was I to discover that a book version was in the making and would soon be published by Seth Grodin's Domino Project? Quite!

After a year of design and production, "B" has hit the shelves (somewhere, Amazon has shelves). Sarah Kay and her illustrator friend, Sophia Janowitz have put together a beautiful slim tome filled with Ms. Janowitz's charming drawings flowing around Ms. Kay's eloquent words.

a smartly done one-poem volume that charms and inspires

When poet Sarah Kay took the TED2011 stage, she began her TED Talk with the poem that is the sole focus on this illustrated book. At the conclusion of the poem's performance, the audience gave her a standing ovation (one of two she would earn for her talk!) and it's easy to see why. "B" is a letter from the poet to a future daughter, but in its beauty & thoughtfulness, it is also a celebration of what it is to be a woman: to be a mother and a daughter.

In explaining how she would mother her own daughter, Kay gives insight to everything she has learned in her life -- both on her own and from her mother. "Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way / to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air." she explains in one section; "There's nothing more beautiful than the way / the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, / no matter how many times it's swept away," she offers in another. Kay is a storyteller who isn't afraid to make you laugh or smile, but is absolutely committed to being honest, to sincerity and authenticity. It makes for a fresh work, one that begs to be revisited -- which may explain why the talk has earned 1 million+ hits on the TED Talks website and another 500,000+ hits on YouTube (and surely growing).

After Kay's talk went viral and poetry lovers discovered both her & her work (numerous poems of hers appear on YouTube, earning her hundreds of thousands of hits), I am sure they went looking for print versions of her poetry. And there wasn't any -- until now. And I hope "B" is just the first in a series of books that the publisher, The Domino Project, will put out of Kay's work -- having just one poem available isn't enough!

Still, it's an absolutely worthy effort. As a spoken word poet, I'm sure it was a challenge to think of the best way to capture the bright energy that Kay brings to her performances and get it onto the page, but this smartly designed hardback book -- with its beautiful & delicately rendered pen & ink illustrations by Sophia Janowitz -- is a winner. It's a perfect way to experience the poem on page, as the illustrations and spacious layout allow each line and beat of the poem to be fully enjoyed and realized. And needless to say, it would make for a lovely gift as well!

I recommend this beautiful one-poem tome for anyone who is a fan of Kay or her work. Or anyone who needs a reminder that "this world is made / out of sugar: it can crumble so easily, but don't / be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it."
