About the Author
Christopher Emdin is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also serves as associate director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education. The creator of the #HipHopEd social media movement and Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S., Emdin was named the 2015 Multicultural Educator of the Year by the National Association of Multicultural Educators and has been honored as a STEM Access Champion of Change by the White House. In addition to teaching, he serves as a Minorities in Energy Ambassador for the US Department of Energy.

I have always been fascinated by the brilliant theater piece For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, by Ntozake Shange. I was first drawn to this powerful work by its colorful cover, and I fell in love with it when I began to read the powerful prose. As a teenager, it was the title that affected me most. Seeing the word enuf in print, on the cover of a book, meant the world to me. It was bold and provocative—and it comforted me to know that someone from outside the four-block radius I called home knew this word. Enuf and enough are very different words. They have the same meaning, can be used in the same context, but each has very different significance to those who employ them. Enuf sits comfortably in the subtitle of a book like For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, allowing the work to call out to those for and about whom it is written. Its presence in the book title indicates that there is no political correctness, no tainting of the truth, and no hiding of what needs to be said. It prepares the reader for the substance of the text.
In many ways, this book draws from the traditions set forth by Shange. While it is neither a collection of poems and stories nor a theater piece, its intentions are similar. The title works toward invoking necessary truths and offering new ways forward. It is clearly intended for “white folks who teach in the hood.” But it is also for those who work with them, hire them, whose family members are taught by them, and who themselves are being, or have been, taught by them.

In short, this book is for people of all colors who take a particular approach to education. They may be white. They may be black. In all cases, they are so deeply committed to an approach to pedagogy that is Eurocentric in its form and function that the color of their skin doesn’t matter. When I say that their skin color doesn’t matter, I am not dismissing the particular responsibilities of privileged groups in societies that disadvantage marginalized groups. I am also not discounting the need to discuss race and injustice under the fallacy of equity. What I am suggesting is that it is possible for people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to take on approaches to teaching that hurt youth of color. Malcolm X described this phenomenon in a powerful speech about the house Negro and the field Negro in the slave South. He described the black slave who toiled in the fields and the house Negro who worked in the white master’s house. He noted that at some point, the house Negro became so invested in the well-being of the master that the master’s needs and concerns took preeminence over his own needs and that of the field Negro. This is the equivalent of the black educator so invested in the structure and pedagogies of the traditional school system that the needs of black and brown students become secondary to maintaining the status quo. For the “white” educator, this investment in traditional schooling is often generational, following the beliefs of parents and grandparents with college degrees and ideas about what school should look like. The point here is that there are both black and white people who can be classified as “white folks”—in that they maintain a system that doesn’t serve the needs of youth in the hood.

“The hood” is often identified as a place where dysfunction is prevalent and people need to be saved from themselves and their circumstances. The hood may be urban, rural, densely or sparsely populated, but it has a number of shared characteristics that make it easy to recognize. The community is often socioeconomically disadvantaged, achievement gaps are prevalent, and a very particular brand of pedagogy is normalized. In these communities, and particularly in urban schools, African American and Latino youth are most hard hit by poverty and its aftereffects. For example, in Atlanta, 80 percent of African American children have been reported to live in conditions of high poverty, compared with 29 percent of their Asian peers and 6 percent of their white peers. In fact, the largest twenty school districts in the nation enroll 80 percent minority students, compared with 42 percent in all school districts. In cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami, urban schools enroll less than 10 percent Anglo students, even though the teachers are overwhelmingly white. In New York public schools, over 70 percent of high school youth are students of color, while over 80 percent of public high school teachers in the state are white.

While some may use these statistics to push for more minority teachers, I argue that there must also be a concerted effort to improve the teaching of white teachers who are already teaching in these schools, as well as those who aspire to teach there, to challenge the “white folks’ pedagogy” that is being practiced by teachers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Anyone who does any kind of teaching should read this. It of course helps with my work with young people from poor families (both rural and urban), but I have learned tricks that even work with my medical students and medicine residents.

I was required to read this for a staff book club and I believe Emden does a really good job of giving concrete examples of how you can relate to students of color in a classroom setting. I will definitely be implementing some of the tips he provided.

Disappointing, didn't explore the main theme

As I felt before with Alexandra Potter’s books, I think she picks great ideas and then doesn’t develop them enough.
The great idea here was: what if you could travel back in time and advise yourself not to make the same mistakes you did?
The poor development was:
1. The first 30% of the book was utter B.O.R.E.D.O.M.E.! You have to force yourself through it. I mean, if I buy a book about travelling back in time I can’t wait for it to happen! She makes you wait 115 pages!!! You get a vague hint it will happen, but no real action until page 116. To me it was such a waste; also because this overlong introduction is so dull, is just everyday activities, boring boyfriend presentation, and work related stuff! She should have cut this part in half, or her editor should have!
2. Once she gets in the past, it is all a minor, minor part of the story. I did expect some old good bottom line where you think you needed to change everything and then rediscovered yourself, but this book was totally shifted on present-day Charlotte, I wanted to know Lottie more, explore a little more her life… and I don’t say change it completely but at least SOMETHING!!! I mean there are so many useless part in the book, like I felt 60% of it was about her job, that she could have explored and developed the main plot, i.e. travelling back in time and advising yourself, so much more! And here we get to reason number three and why the stars of this book dropped dramatically.
3. REASON THREE IS A SPOILER… DON’T GO FURTHER IF YOU STILL WANT TO READ THE BOOK!! Ok this one was so bad it infuriated me. What is the point of writing a book, and supposedly, a happy, easy, funny book, as chick-lit should be for definition, and then drop this on the reader: when you are approaching the end of the book, you discover that the heroin in her youth becomes pregnant after a bad one-night stand and then decide to have an abortion. Already sad enough. But then the Author makes the story go down in the same way twice?? Is she crazy? Already she didn’t change one thing of the past, and this was disappointing and unexciting enough, but this one she should have changed!! Does anyone agree with me?

Mistakes are in fact life lessons

This book has a very resourceful plot, it goes off on a tangent to reality, so that the main character gets into contact with her own younger self and tries to help her avoid the blatant mistakes committed by the older self at a younger age. It sounds a bit baffling when explained but the story is extremely readable and I think the conclusion is that mistakes are there to provide lessons to be learnt and create who we are. The quest for true love is of course successful so the ending of the book leaves the reader with a smile on the face and hope in the heart.

This was a fun, lighthearted read about a woman who was able to go back in time to visit her younger self. Her younger self was about to make a terrible mistake, but then was she?

It appears she was more 'sensible' than her older self.

Examining the works of such novelists as Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen, and the Bront�s, she reveals the ways in which these authors rewrite the domestic practices and sexual relations of the past to create the historical context through which modern institutional power would seem not only natural but also humane, and therefore to be desired.

The Importance of Armstrong's Desire and Domestic Fiction

Nancy Armstrong's influential book, Desire and Domestic Fiction: A Political History of the Novel, connects the rise of the novel with the history of sexuality (ie. gender difference) and the rise of the English middle class. Armstrong's three part explination for the rise of the novel acts as a correction of Isaac Watts' influential triple rise thesis in his study, The Rise of the Novel. Watts connects the rise of the novel to the rise of the middle class, the rise of Puritan values, and the rise of literacy. Armstrong's emphasis clearly differs from Watts insofar as she defines the novel as domestic, women's writing. Armstrong not only redefined Watts' history of the novel, but created a new space in the academic debates about domesticity. By stating the domestic novels were bound up in (indeed antecedent to) the formation of gender difference and the middle class she grants more power to domestic novels than previous ciritics had allowed. Armstrong's analysis of novels (though her writing also has illumunating sections on eighteenth century conduct books and educational theory) begins with Samuel Richardson's Pamela and Jane Austen's Emma, in which she notes the importance of a woman's qualities of mind, as opposed to rank, and how Austen's writing worked to standarize the English language. The study contiues with a history of unions (combinations) in the early ninteenth century, and then moves onto examine the Brontes and how Victorian novels construct the domestic space as one in which women have the power of survelliance, as well as the Vicotrian phenomenon of a character's desiring the one person they are not permitted to obtain (Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights). Her study concludes with a discussion of the process and importance of reading itself. I highly reccomend Desire and Domestic Fiction. It is well worth the read, especially for people who care about the history of the novel, redefinitions of the political sphere and a political and cultural history of sexuality and domesticity.

As good as Bikram's

I didn't know what to expect of this but I took the gamble. It's very well done and looks good on the DVD even though it must have been re-encoded later.
She basically uses Bikram's standard set (which I love) and modifies about three poses, deletes a handful, and adds some. The ones deleted are those done on the belly or which put pressure on the belly; the modified ones generally involve putting your knees apart to allow room for your belly. I think the poses are held for a shorter time than Bikram's too. The new poses are just a few to replace the stomach poses.

The audio track that comes with it is useful for playing again and again; it isn't so slow that it gets annoying on successive repetitions.

I want to add one things I really think she should have mentioned: when you are pregnant, your tendons and ligaments loosen up a lot. It is very easy to overextend and overstretch. Do not strain when you are doing the poses.

I think this is a great buy for anyone who already enjoys Bikram's Yoga and wants to continue doing it safely while in the second and third trimester.

Have not used this as a pregnant woman myself, but as a teaching tool. I am a Bikram Yoga teacher and it's a fabulous resource to have. Have seen many pregnant mamas use this sequence. I'm thrilled to now have it on my kindle and not just as a DVD. Thanks Rajashree!

The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing

It is an interesting analysis of Riefenstahl's Gertrude Stein's, Lee Miller, and Janet Flanner's fascination with Hitler, and how they wove him into the structure and narratives of their own lives. Gertrude's Stein's relationship was somewhat ambivalent, even though she did promote him for the 1934 Nobel Peace Prize. As a Jew it didn't make very much sense but then most of her writing doesn't either. She's an esthete whose politics were very much shaded to the right, thanks to her close relationship with Bernard Fay, supporter of Petain and anti-Semite. She survived the War thanks to Fay and her attempts to get her translations of Petain's speeches published by Cerf in America. The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing. The Riefenstahl section was a rehash of the usual leftist line(ala Susan Sontag) and a lot of nonsense about cinematic semiology.. She has a very poor writing style, drenched as it is in feminist jargon. Still, I would say that it is an intelligent book and worth looking at. after you've read Pages, Rhiel's and O'Sickey's collection of essays in Riefenstahl Screened. Also read Barbara Will's book, Unlikely Collaborator's, which is a more in depth analysis of Stein's relationship to Bernard Fay and her support of Fascism. To be fair, the book says at the outset that it is only focusing on specific terms of the relationship between dictator and artist, so I can't fault her for paring down her information. My problem with the book is that I find that most feminist prose to be off-putting, though they do have a perspective worth reading. Interesting ,though, how she doesn't spend much time discussing Lee Miller's relationship to her father, who took countless nude photos of her form childhood on. He seemed to me to be the ultimate patriarchal tyrant.

About the Author
Elvira Lang, MD, FSIR, FSCEH, is a pioneer and leading world expert in the use of hypnosis during medical procedures Her research-based refinement of hypnotic techniques has resulted in greater patient comfort, increased practitioner effectiveness, and improved financial performance. Dr. Lang is Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and creator of Comfort TalkTM: a widely acclaimed innovative method on non-pharmaceutical sedation. She is founder of Hypnalgesics, LLC, which trains medical teams in rapid rapport and quick hypnotic techniques. Dr. Lang is internationally known in the field of interventional radiology; she served as Chief of Interventional Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard School of Medicine in Boston from 1998 through 2006. Dr. Lang has trained nurses, doctors and technologists to incorporate procedure hypnosis into medical areas from a variety of disciplines including MRI, breast care, oncology, urology, gastroenterology, diagnostic and interventional radiology, obstetrics, and dentistry. Battle-tested

As an anesthesiologist I was interested in possibly applying hypnosis as an adjunct for pain relief and sedation in patients undergoing surgery. This book appealed to me because of its practicality. It is short, concise and results-oriented. The fact that Dr. Lang developed and refined her approach in the setting of interventional radiology attracted my interest because the time and pressure stakes are comparable to the operating room. Other books on hypnosis I'd seen involved psychotherapy or personal improvement applications, where the subject is already motivated and usually in a more relaxed setting. In fact, I'd assumed that the technique could only work if undertaken under calm conditions in advance. But the approach used here is applied in real time, as the patient is undergoing the actual procedure. That and the fact that the authors offer it to all patients, not just a select sub-group, convinced me that the technique must be effective.

The writing and organization of the book further reassured me that this is a no-nonsense, systematic approach whose results can be objectively measured. Each chapter starts with a short case report that not only illustrates a point, but also the clinical details of which convinced me that the authors have extensive real-life experience dealing with anxious patients! The chapters are bite-sized and clear, consistently evidence-based and referenced, and end with a bullet list summary of key points. In fact, it could be fairly described as a manual for procedural hypnosis, including scripts for induction that can be used verbatim. Of course, as I'm sure the authors would agree, some supplemental training would be highly desirable.

I congratulate the authors on their refreshing pragmatism and offer my five stars.

This totally changed my view about hypnosis.

This totally changed my view about hypnosis. Previously my idea of it was probably similar to a lot of people’s: and would involve images of a magician on stage getting somebody to do something silly for the entertainment of others. Or, one of my friends would go off to be hypnotized by a mysterious character to stop smoking.

But it turns out that medical staff are using hypnotic techniques to provide real benefit to patients undergoing procedures where sedation is either not desirable or not an option.

An example would be an MRI, where a patient has to stay still for a very long time. I’ve never had an MRI, but had previously thought it might be rather soothing. But what I didn’t realize is how long you have to be in there for, and that it is quite noisy.

The way it’s explained is that under hypnosis you enter a state a lot like day-dreaming, or “spacing-out” – which I certainly can relate to. Wouldn’t it be great to “space-out” during a long procedure you’re not looking forward to? Medical Hypnosis does just that.

In an NIH funded study, patients were offered the option of a “relaxation exercise” before under going the procedure. To keep things consistent, all the healthcare providers used the same standard script devised by a Stanford Psychiatry Professor.

The book contains that script.
As a non-medical person, and a squirmy patient I found it fascinating.

The book tangentially gave me an a-ha moment concerning people who don’t make eye contact. I’d always thought they were being rude, but in fact it is just their particular way of listening intently, dictated by their sensory style (sight, sound, touch etc.)

The other a-ha moment concerns building rapport between doctor and patient. And how things small things might affect it.
I have experienced this first hand in my doctor’s consulting room.
He is a wonderful doctor, but the layout of the room places him very far away from me; and we are separated by a computer. It all conspires to make me feel rather isolated, and is not an ideal layout for our rapport to flourish.

This is a great book. I recommend it for teaching to be used as a textbook for learning hypnosis/guided imagery in clinical settings. It reinforces that this isn't neurosurgery and can even be done by use of a script. Great examples and helpful hints to move you along.
You will find this a great addition to your library.

Excellent Missal for Catholics or any Christian. Has commentary for each of the daily readings.
Gives background on the state of Christianity at the time of each reading, as well as commentary on each gospel.
Well worth the price.

As Good as it Gets!

True to its name, it is a Weekly Missal (Monday through Saturday); for Sundays' needs, Vatican II has a separate Missal, as does the St. Joseph Edition. This missal is slightly larger than the Roman Missal Daily Missal 1962, Flexible Cover, Burgundy colour but much easier to follow and does not include the Latin for the Episals, Gospels, and the Parts of the Mass. In Vatican II Missal there is less need to skip around to follow the mass, the layout is as close to perfect as possible. The daily insight at the beginning of each day's mass, makes for a meditative experience. Highly recommended for those who wish to follow the mass on a day to day basis and great for Lectors.

Excellent everyday & travel companion

Currently living overseas, we have made use of this missal (along with the Vatican II Sunday missal) nearly everyday for the past two years. Yes, it is large but not cumbersome as some reviewers have said. We have taken it with us on all of our travels, making non-English Masses more meaningful. Just throw it in our backpack with our other things. I think it is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to become more familiar with the Bible (the weekday readings cover much of the Bible over the two year cycle) vs. what they can hear only on Sundays. Highly recommend!
