An awful and unnecessary addition to an already crowded Intermediate Macroeconomics textbook market.

Rossana frequently deviates from the standard treatment of the Intermediate Macroeconomics material. These deviations are usually pointless and serve only to severely complicate matters and confuse the student.

I illustrate using only his chapter on investment as an example (Chapter 5).

Here, Rossana adds in something called "costs of adjustment". As it is, most students already have enough trouble understanding the usual panoply of concepts and equations associated with capital accumulation. Rossana forces them to also absorb another completely distinct notion known as "costs of adjustment". This might be more realistic, but, as with any economic model, added realism comes at the cost of making things more complicated and detracting away from the most salient points that the modeler wishes to make. And when it comes to trying to teach 20 year old undergraduate students a little something about macroeconomics, the cost is utter and complete confusion.

Not longer after (p. 146ff), Rossana throws in yet another completely unexpected wrench - "Inventory Investment" (pp. 146-151). In most other Intermediate Macro textbooks, inventories are usually dealt with informally and without throwing in any additional notation. Rossana chooses to throw in also F (finished goods inventories), F* (desired level of finished goods), S (sales), α (a "Greek parameter", as he calls it, where α > 0 and F* = αS). What is most infuriating is when he throws in also something called the "Flexible Accelerator Model of Inventory Investment" (p. 149). Here he says that ΔF = λ�(F* - F), where the "Greek character λ is bounded between zero and unity". This is the "speed of adjustment" of inventories. This is incredibly confusing, if only because when dealing with capital stock, he already (p. 135) had ΔK = λ�(K* - K), where λ is the speed of adjustment of the capital stock. This is confusing on so many levels.

There is probably no one (other than Rossana) who uses this book anyway, but this book should serve as an exemplar of the unfortunate tendency in economics to explain ideas in the most convoluted and opaque way possible.

Beautifully written, it reads like poetry

The premise for Joyce Carol Oates' tiny novel "Black Water" is the scandalous Chippaquiddick incident that anyone over the age of 40 should be familiar with. But what's remarkable about it is that Oates has transformed this "faction" into a beautiful ballad. The happenings of that fateful night when the black Toyota plunged headlong into the swampy river is told through the eyes of the drowning girl. There's a sense of real pathos in the telling cos it's painfully obvious the girl's impressed with the Senator for the wrong reasons and that he's a cad. The manner of the Senator's escape from the capsized car and his cruel abandonment of her as she awaits hopelessly for her own rescue is a wrench to read. The novel reads like a poem in parts. Maybe there's a song in there somewhere, with a verse, a chorus and a middle eight. By using the drowning girl's vantage viewpoint, Oates has created a powerful masterpiece that's so wonderfully compelling it bears reading over and over again. Truly great stuff !

An American Psyche, an American Tragedy

The event itself is quite simple, and all too common. A drunken ride with a tragic ending. This is what Joyce Carol Oates gives us on the first page. From there her prose backpedals through Kelly Kelleher's childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood into the hours leading up to her death, which is described in nearly every chapter. The repeated death scene lends to the intensity of the novel. One would expect the book to go forward into the investigation of the accident, yet instead its narration goes backwards. Where, then, are the surprises? The surprises come in Oates's biting prose and in her portrayal of a female growing up in modern America with the ancient pressures of beauty and normalcy, as well as the more recent pressures of ambition and intellectual pursuits. In every chapter, there are thrilling sentences that left this reader in awe of Oates's strength as a writer. For example, this sentence leaves the reader feeling as thrown around as Kelly in the out of control Toyota: "In the jolting car they did seem immune to any harm, still less to a vehicular accident, for The Senator was driving in a way one might call recklessly, you might say his judgment was impaired by drink but not his skill as a driver for he did have skill, handling the compact car as if by instinct and with an air too of kingly contempt, so Kelly was thinking, though they were lost, though they would not make the 8:20 PM ferry after all, she was privileged to be here and no harm could come to her like a young princess in a fairy tale so recently begun but perhaps it would not end for some time, perhaps." The plot focuses on the interactions between Kelly and a never named Senator. They meet at a Fourth of July party, spend an afternoon filled with sexual tension together and decide to spend that night in a motel. It is the Senator's drunken haste that causes the accident, but this is not Oates's focus. Instead, it is the life forces contending within Kelly Kelleher that have made her make the decision to accompany a drunk man her father's age to a motel, out of part sexual desire, part political ambition. The plot is not the most gripping aspect of this novel. Instead, it is the character development. One chapter begins, "She did not believe in astrology, in the breathless admonitions and Ben Franklin-pep talks of the magazine horoscopes, nor did she believe in the Anglican God to Whom-in Whom?-for Whom?-she had long ago been confirmed." The reader glimpses into this woman's psyche and comes away feeling slightly disturbed. Not in the sense that one has seen into the inner workings of an imbalanced person, but because one has seen the inner workings of a completely `normal,' functioning person, whom we would herald in this society as a model of integrity and intelligence. These inner workings are rational and logical, yet at the same time damaging and frightening. The dichotomy between her outer self and her inner self is the most disturbing aspect of this book. What is most intriguing about this novel is its size. Not only is it short in length, but frequently its chapters are no more than a few pages, sometimes even a single paragraph. The effect is that one feels that before Kelly dies in each chapter, her life is flashed before her eyes and we are the witnesses to that event. I highly recommend this book. It is a quick, intense read.

American girls, politics, tragedy, deterrence.

With her novel Black Water, Joyce Carol Oates has taken a sad occurrence in American political history, the Chappaquiddick incident, and explored it from the perspective that most of America and the media did not consider when the accident happened, that of the young woman who lost her life in the car crash. She then utilizes that perspective to put forth a compelling statement of the deterrent effect such an incident should have on other "American girls" who would follow in the footsteps of Mary Jo Kopenkney, whom Oates bases the main character, Kelly Kelleher, upon.
The book's most striking feature is its unconventional structure. Though it is only 154 pages long, it is divided into 32 chapters, some of which are only a page long, and two parts. The chapters often repeat sections of the story over and over, adding a little more information or changing the perspective just a bit, until ultimately the reader receives a fully constructed picture of the incident and the preceding events.
Oates chooses to delve deeply into the main character, Kelly Kelleher, and leave the would-be antagonist with just a vague descriptive title, The Senator. There are several reasons for this, among them a kind of ironic objectification of the political figure in a way similar to the media's treatment of Mary Jo Kopenkney, and to focus the reader's attention in such a way that he or she realizes that the identity of The Senator is not what is important. It is what he represents, a glossy, distinguished portrait of American political success that is most vital to Oates's thematic concerns. Oates is addressing the attraction that some young women in our society feel for that political success, and the resulting ways that cold and selfish men can manipulate that attraction. Black Water is a wake up call for those who would be Kelly Kelleher, an "American girl" who is led into a dangerous, even fatal, situation by letting herself be controlled by a man's esteem and political power. Oates wishes that those who would follow in Kelly's footsteps to see the incident as a deterrent, a warning, and she makes this absolutely clear with her inclusion of a detailed description of the death penalty in chapter 30. The death penalty is intended as a deterrent to would-be criminals, and Oates wishes Kelly Kelleher's "death penalty" to be seen in this way as well.
The novel's prose style is simple and pristine. Oates leaves aside complicated, dense language in order to better communicate her thematic concerns. At times the structure can be a bit confusing because of the repetition, but the average reader should have little trouble. Its subject matter is somewhat dark in tone, but that is simply the nature of the theme, which inherently requires a grave and serious approach. With this novel, Oates has achieved an excellent balance of pleasurable reading with the exploration of a vital issue. I highly recommend this book to any reader, regardless of your favorite genre.

Adorable Children's Christmas Book from the Viewpoint of the Innkeeper

We received this book probably 25 years ago from an Aunt and it continues to be one of my favorite children's Christmas books. It is a sweet story from the viewpoint of the innkeeper. No one ever thought about how his night was affected by Jesus' birth. Funny and sweet and it makes me cry every time. Great illustrations! Bought several copies to give out this coming Christmas to all my grown children.

I received this book and started reading right away. The theme of a much-older man with a young woman isn't new, but it's wonderful how Diana Palmer hits the nail right on the head by having the character's overcome their odds to live happily ever after. Two wonderful stories in one book is a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon or a sleepless night.

Hit the sweet spot for me!

It's often difficult to find good intermediate to advanced technical books that help you get over the hump. This is most definitely one of those books, IMO, along with Javascript: The Good Parts by Crockford and High Performance JavaScript by Zakas.

If you're a beginner, even an ambitious beginner, such as an experienced programmer in another language, you don't want to start here. For beginners, I'd recommend Zakas (Javascript for Web Developers) as the most complete introduction to Javascript, the DOM and browser scripting; or Simply JavaScript from Sitepoint for a gentler introduction that emphasizes the separation of structured content (HTML), presentation (CSS) and behavior (scripting the DOM with Javascript).

OTOH, if you're more or less comfortable with core Javascript and the DOM but want to clarify and explore the many idiosyncracies and fine points of JS, this book really hits the sweet spot. The table of contents is available on Amazon or O'Reilly, so I won't recap it - but will mention that Stefanov both chooses his topics and covers and organizes his material very well. This is a precisely and well-written book, and the reader will infer that there must have be a lot of experience, previous history and discussions behind these 200+ pages. I've read the blogs of the majority of his technical reviewers and believe you're in good hands here. I'm really lovin' this book. The only caveat - don't expect a lot on browser scripting. However, I'd be surprised if the somewhat experienced, but non-ninja, Javascript programmer did not significantly take his/her knowledge to a higher level after reading JavaScript Patterns.

Addendum: I was interrupted by a rush job during my initial reading of this book and after returning to it now and rereading the early chapters and carefully reading several of the later chapters, I'm even more impressed by this book. The heart of the book, when it gets a little more advanced (functions, object creation patterns and code re-use patterns) has proved really valuable.

At last! A readable, expert book on JavaScript patterns

This book is not for the newbie JavaScript programmer (for the complete beginner I suggest JavaScript: The Missing Manual). It assumes some deep knowledge about the language and one is well advised to have read Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts before venturing into this book. Having said that, this book is just simply amazing!. It is very obvious that the author knows his subject, knows how to write and knows what problems people actually have. This is no small feat, as most programming books usually fails in one or more of these areas.

The book covers numerous inheritance and code reuse techniques, including most of the GOF patterns, but does also suggest several novel ways to take advantage (and not hack around) JavaScripts prototypical nature. I especially liked the code "tours", where the author spends considerable time developing a solution step by step, demonstrating pitfalls and side effects while simultaneously anticipating questions the reader might have. These JavaScript vistas has added considerably to my knowledge of the language, and I expect I will comeback to them again in the future (this book can easily take a second and third reading).

In summary, a very elegant written book containing an incredibly amount of knowledge, at a great price. Quite possible the best book on JavaScript in existence - highly recommended.

The surgical oncologist is often the centerpiece of the care team and research program, and must understand all aspects of this intricate field in order to make sound clinical decisions, and in order to continue to move toward a solution to this complicated puzzle. The surgical oncologist must also maintain a bedside manner that is appropriate for patients confronting the most frightening of diagnoses and directly facing their mortality. With that backdrop in mind, this text was developed as a comprehensive, up to date review of all knowledge required of a surgical oncologist: from basic biology to the application of regional chemotherapy and minimally invasive surgery to palliative care. The target audience is intended to be medical students, surgery residents, practicing surgeons and ancillary staff with an interest in surgical oncology. As the field moves toward board certification, this text will serve as an excellent reference for study and review. The decision to only list landmark papers at the end of each chapter and not reference within the text was made to improve the readability of the text, and to focus the reader on general truths and not esoteric facts. The ease of searching publications on line makes detailed referencing unnecessary. In each chapter with an emphasis on evidence based facts and an assistant editor focused on evidence based tables for each disease site. Our long-term goal is for regular updates of this text and to keep current with important clinical evidence which may change our approach to therapy. While the overall progress toward a cure for cancer has seemed slow, the field of oncology is changing more rapidly than any other speciality. We learn new biology as well as new therapies daily are constantly being tested. This text will keep the reader updated with these important advances in a comprehensive but readable format.

In my Opinion...
The back of the book pretty much describes the plot of the story. Elise was in a car accident that robs her of her memory. The book starts with her in the hospital struggling over her feelings towards the man that she is told is her husband. Alejandro is a very handsome powerful man. The problem is that Elise does not feel married to him and she certainly does not feel pregnant. When she is released from the hospital she really does not have any choice but to go home with Alejandro. Both Elise and Alejandro become closer as the days go by, but what will happen when she regains her memory. Once Elise's memory returns the truth comes out and that truth could shatter her marriage. I liked this story, but I believe that it could have been so much better if we had gotten Alejandro's point of view. The entire story was told through Elise. Other than that this was a quick, short, enjoyable read.

Forgotten Husband

This is a story set in the 90's in Australia. The story revolves around Elise when she wakes up in the hospital not remembering any thing. Her husband Alejandro takes her home and they try to reconnect. When she does finally remember everything she also remembers the OW. Now it is his turn to make her remember how it was since the accident not before. In typical Bianchin fashion the verbal sparing within the upper echilon was great. I have read many books by Bianchin and enjoy them all.
