hot amd sexy

I really enjoyed this book and I will be looking for similar stories from Michelle Love.

Jade is just finishing her course on creative writing when she decides to do some research into BDSM. She can't understand why women might want to be submissives. She goes online and asks for information on the website of a BDSM club. Her query is answered by Pierce, a Dom in Oregon. They develop an online relationship, and Pierce convinces Jade to come and visit him during her holidays to try out BDSM. They stay at a secluded cabin and develop their relationship. Pierce was very careful to introduce Jade to BDSM a small step at a time. When their time is up are they just going back to their individual lives, or will they carry on their relationship?

Interesting Read

If your looking for a hot fast paced erotic read, then this is for you. This story is packed with heat while it introduces you to the world of BDSM. From the beginning to the end it will entertain you and keep you interested. This novella is the first I have read from this author and I look forward to see what she writes next. It will be interesting to see what else she writes about. I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book.

A definite read. Very well written...nucevand steamy.

This is the story of Jade, a university student in the UK taking a creative writing course and Pierce, a Dom in a BDSM club in Oregon. They mneet online when Jade asks questions wanting to learn morevavbout why someone would want to be a submissive and generally about then life at tulle. She eventually wants to be an author and write erotic and steamy romance novels. Things get steamy over the internet and they finally agree to meet after Jade finishes her creative writing course. There is so much electricity between these two, they don't need any other source of power! This book is amazing I read this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.

I love this series!!

Holy nightmare! I about had a fit when this one ended! Really, I wanna know what's gunna happen NOW!!! I mean, there's a good bit of crazy going around, and I have totally fallen in love with this series. We picked up right where we ended in the first book, and it started with a whammy! This is the second book, and it's as good, if not better, than the first!!

So, Aria Naveed is trying to deal with her powers of fire. She is also trying to cope with a loss that rocked her. After the attack on her that killed someone special to her, she is trying to get moving again. She knows she has to do it, but no one ever wants to go on with that loss. But the world keeps moving, and vampires are being sent as assassins after her. So, she moves on, or tries to, and ends up getting into something series, like really serious, like OMG, did that just happen?!?!?! Serious! And she doesn't even get along with the local alpha, though her best friend is a wolf and in his pack. But the alpha offers her protection from the assassins. She can stay near her BFF and have a nice place to be. But this is gunna cause a stir as well.

So, let me see if I can talk about some things without spoiling other things... Things are complicated but seem to be going ok. But the road to hell is always paved with good intentions, and when Aria gets hurt, to save her life, someone does something that is very very irreversible. It's permanent and life altering and completely woah!! And she doesn't trust those around her, so she's in a not so nice place. And on top of that, her mother is not dead. Her mother is leading the bad guys. And that's some woah moments there too. She's strong, but I don't know if all of this won't drive her nuts. She's trying to figure out who she is and what's she's worth, as well as learning to control her powers. And her love life, well, it's complicated. I don't know what to say except bad words so I won't say anything LOL!

The writing is excellent, fast paced and action packed. It's also got good suspense and mystery to surround it. This is the first that there's ever any major hints at a romance so keep in mind this is urban fantasy, though there will be romance to come because.... yeah, that happened. LOL I loved the plot line, I lost my jaw for a moment with that plot twist, and I couldn't believe how that played out. This is an engaging story with a wonderful leading heroine. I like several of the side characters as well, and one character that I want to love but just can't seem to let go of the things he's done. I want him to be a good guy so bad. No, no names or hints. Intrigue and suspense is a big part of this book, so it will stay that way with my review. I seriously need book three, like ASAP! I need it, not want it, need it. With that said, 5 WOLFY PAWS, all though maybe I should be saying tiger paws after this book :)

Paranormal creatures are no longer hiding from the world...

As we delve into Kissed by Fire book two in the Blood & Magic series we find Aria trying to come to terms with the fact that she has inherited Sanborn Place from her friend and father figure Mike. She feels guilt over the fact that he died because someone was looking for her. She was supposed to be the one who died not Mike after all she is the one that they want dead.

Someone wants her dead very badly and is sending vampires that are not ready to be on their own as of yet they are too young. While Aria is fighting one of these vampires Declan the Pack’s alpha just happens to be in the area and he kills the vampire to keep him from killing Aria but she is furious with him for doing so and tells him in not a very quiet manner either I might add. She lets him have it with both feet. She didn’t want the vampire dead she was trying to subdue him so she could find out what ever she could about whom and why someone is trying to kill her.

With someone wanting her dead Declan offers her a place to stay at the compound where the shifters live. Aria has been on her own for a long time now and thinks she is very capable of taking care of herself. But when she is attacked by a very big monster she realizes she needs help and calls James for backup. She hopes he makes it in time before this monster kills her.

By the time James, Declan and other pack members make it to where Aria is fighting the monster she is very serious trouble. Aria is almost dead and so that leaves James and Declan with a decision to make to keep her alive. Declan mates with Aria to keep her alive and when she finds out she is furious. Aria doesn’t like this idea of being mated to a shifter and being in need of a babysitter besides she still has a job to do and is determined to do it. She will find out who is trying to kill her. She doesn’t need any babysitter. Even though she ends up in trouble on more than one occasion that probably could have been avoid if she would have just listened to Declan or James and not been so stubborn. But Aria is one tough cookie and very independent. She has been taking care of herself since her parents were killed several years ago.

I have loved following along with Aria, James, Declan and all of the other characters on their journeys. I love the world that the author has created for the vampires, shifter and all of the paranormal creatures. If you have not read Kissed by Fire then I suggest you do but I would like to suggest that you read the first book Cursed by Fire first so that you will know what is going on with Aria and how it all started. I am very anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.

Great sequel

In this second book of the Blood & Magic series Danielle Annett continues writing about Aria, a pyrokineticon who's on her path to justice. After finding out who killed Daniel, a young shifter boy, and being attacked Aria now falls under the protection of the shifter pack. Aria found out some new facts that turned her world upside down. Aria is working through her grief after losing people who were close to her. She also learns that she is now the owner of Sanborn Place. This comes with extra responsibilities. Aria needs to adjust to her new world but she finds it hard to accept help.

Declan orders his pack to find a mate for Aria. He needs and wants her on his side. Aria is too valuable to let go. Declan thinks that if he can manage to make Aria fall in love with a shifter he can bind her to his pack. Because of the fact that Aria is so independent it's not uncommon for her to go out by herself. Declan can’t let anything happen to her, so he follows or accompanies her most of the time. Declan can’t deny that the more time he spends with Aria the more he’s beginning to feel
for her.

After everything that's happened Aria has grown emotionally. She still is a force to be reckoned with, but she also shows her vulnerability more. This, in combination with her skills and determination, makes her an interesting character. Instead of trying to overrule her Declan learns that Aria
responds better if he supports her. I loved the way that their romance slowly evolves into something deeper. When more enemies join the upcoming war will they be able to survive together?

Kissed by Fire is a great second book. All of the creatures that Danielle Annett writes about make the story engaging and a definite page-turner. The first book and the second book of the series both have open endings, so it's necessary to read the stories in the right order. Kissed by Fire shows you more of Aria’s background and Danielle Annett reveals a lot of new secrets. The twists and turns made this book hard to put down. The third book in this series, Burned by Fire, will come out on September 30th and I must say that I can’t wait to find out how the story will continue.

Christianity, too, continued to prove an unsettling influence - accepted and established in Constantinople, but not in Rome.

Dense starting point, but good.

This is a short little book that is tackling a very large subject. It also, self-consciously is limiting the extent it covers its subject, thus the limiting of 400 A.D. to 1000 A.D. It is also limited in that originally the book was written in 1952, only with some updating done in both '67 and '85. At its core is still a good framework for what was known on the subject in 1950.
All that said it does provide a good little introduction to the topic of post-Roman Barbarian folk movements. The major tribes involved in those movements in Western Europe were the Franks, Goths, Lombards, and a few others. Because of the historical record being a lot of Swiss-cheese, with writers from the past often confusing one tribe for another, or using words for Goth or Frank as a generic term meaning "Any German dude" complicates the modern understanding of the situation.
The major reason people find the study of these folk movements and invasions confusing is because even the people writing about it at the time, the Roman-Celtic peoples living in Italy, Spain and France were confused by it. This has lead to history scholars being confused about it to a certain extent. Naturally enough, this leads to a lot of confusion among laypersons on the subject.
This is only a good introduction though. If you are seriously interested in any of the tribes in particular, then you may wish to look elsewhere. But for an understanding of some of the major interrelationship disputes the various tribes had with the Romans and each other, then this provides a good starting point.
Of particular value is the books endnotes and bibliography. These provide direction for the person looking to continue and learn more about the topics and issues raised herein.

does the author care if you know

This book covers one of the most confused periods in western history, and I must say it left me more confused than enlightened.

The novice may gain superficial knowledge about the Lombards, Visigoths, Franks, and Ostrogoths, from Hadrill's compact book, but not much else. (I challenge any beginner who trodded through this to say anything illuminating about Visigothic Spain!)

Too many times the author frolics about interpreting documents and developments without giving any background information. If I did not know any better, I would think he was having a debate in his own mind. Hadrill certainly lacks expositional skills, nor is his ability to write clear english any better.

I would not recommend this to a novice (layperson or student). It is one of those books you read, set down, reflect upon, and realize you do not remember anything it said.
For an advanced student who has the requisite background knowledge, it might serve as a contentious (brilliant? tendentious?) interpretive history, but for the beginner it is gibberish.

History professors should stop using this text in introductory courses. Why not pick a text by an author who actually cares about EXPLAINING the Barbarian West to students so that they will UNDERSTAND the time period. Methinks Hadrill wishes to impress with his erudition too much.

This is a book that will give food for thought, but it requires sturdy teeth to chew.

This book is at times too dense and frustrating. The advanced student will nevertheless find much that is valuable and refreshing, while the novice will possibly be intimidated or annoyed away.

I liked the non-reverent and the contrarian approach that the author employed to deconstruct some received views (or those that were received back in his day) which he shows to be not based in fact. At times, though, he seems to be carried too far by the desire to be original. Also, some of the discussions are terse and cryptical to the point of being completely unclear. For example, I simply di not understand what exactly he was making of Odoacer: in a short paragraph two contradictory views were advanced, each with great assurance.

Fascinating Lovecraftian Adventure Horror

This is a fun and fascinating period piece, not so much something H.P. Lovecraft himself might have written as what you might have gotten if Clark Ashton Smith had written a Bram Stoker pastiche. The narrative is largely in the form of diary entries, which normally leads to rather slow pacing, but the plot twists its way to the thrilling climax with gusto without sacrificing the excellent characterization.

Not surprisingly to anyone familiar with the role-playing adventure this is based on, "The Express Diaries" is more adventure than horror - although the moments of true horror are quite disturbing and/or disgusting. Much of the story is tinged with a slight air of the surreal. There's a fair bit of humor as well, though not quite as much as in the original source material.

As I said, this is based on a role-playing adventure. Specifically, this is based on the classic scenario "Horror on the Orient Express" for Call of Cthulhu, as played by the Bradford Players in 2008. The audio of their sessions is available at [...] and is definitely worth a listen. The novel makes some changes from the game, but a surprising amount of what made the game so entertaining makes it into the book in some form. Marsh nails the characters' voices, and the whole thing really feels like it could have been written in character by the Bradford Players.

The Kindle version is almost free of the quirks and glitches that plague most Kindle books. My one problem with reading it on my Kindle was the table of contents, which contains nothing but a list of numbers, each of which takes the reader to a footnote. Otherwise, this was a stellar e-book of a terrific adventure yarn!

Wonderful fast paced terror and fun

"The Express Diaries" is a well written fun-tastic ride into adventure and terror. Much like the luxurious locomotive in the story this book picks up a head of steam and pulls the reader rapidly along page by page to it's exciting climax.

Nick Marsh has a done a masterful job of turning one of my favorite RPG adventure games into a wonderful fast paced novel. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's universe, The Call of Cthulhu roll playing game or 1920's era adventure stories.

I'd also love to have an audio book version read by the original players of the game, the wonderful and talented Bradford Players of yog-sothoth.com

I recommend this book very highly.

When Nick Marsh contacted me to ask me if I'd be interested in reviewing his book, I said, “Sure, just send me a Kindle copy, or a .pdf.” Nick said he'd happily send me a Kindle copy, but he'd really like to send me a copy of the hardcover too. I realised why as soon as I opened the package a few days later. The book is gorgeous! It's an obvious labour of love, from the fabulous illustrations to the red bookmark ribbon.

I hadn't realised at the time that it was based on a Call Of Cthulhu role-playing campaign. Had I known, I have to admit it might well have put me off. As a general rule, I've found books and films based on games to be disappointing. Not always—I really liked some of the 'World of Darkness' based novels for instance—but more often than not.

I'm very glad I wasn't put off, because I liked this book a lot. It's a genre mash-up, set in 1925, combining an Agatha Christie style crime thriller with H.P. Lovecraft's mythos. Nick Marsh does a superb job of capturing the period flavour in his characters. Each of them has their own voice, easily distinguished from the others, which is no mean achievement. The action is set on the Orient Express and its many stops en route. There's even a very brief, unnamed cameo from a certain Belgian detective with a waxed moustache.

The Lovecraftian elements are much more subtle than I expected. There's just the one early reference to Unaussprechlichen Kulten by von Junzt, but that's it as far as the ubiquitous tomes and entities of the Cthulhu Mythos are concerned. This is by no means a bad thing. Many would say that over-reliance on such trappings does not necessarily make for good Lovecraftian stories and they'd be right.

Apart from the beautiful presentation, the main strength of this book is in the characterisations. This is ironic in a way, because that was certainly not one of the strengths of either Christie, or Lovecraft. All the characters in 'The Express Diaries' are fully rounded, with both strengths and faults. Colonel Neville “Never” Goodenough, for instance is in many ways a typical, jingoistic, racist, military man of the period, but that doesn't stop him from being a good, stand-up hero in all other respects. He's realistically handled in the way his growing respect for particular individuals doesn't temper his opinion of foreigners in general. That particular lapse in logic is so common in many casual bigots.

As well as Colonel Goodenough, the cast of characters includes: Mrs Elisabeth (Betty) Sunderland—widowed matriarch of the Yorkshire Sunderlands with a chequered past, which includes a one-time sideline as 'The Silver Fox'; her niece, Mrs Violet Davenport –wife and assistant to the famous magician, ‘The Marvellous Davenport’; her secretary, Miss Grace Murphy—a young spinster; Professor Alphonse Moretti—an emeritus professor in European history and languages at the Universities of Florence and Belarus and Milos Valinchek—a Czechoslovakian arms dealer who was hideously scarred during the Great War.

The entire book is composed of diaries, letters and journal entries by the various characters, which is a nod to fiction of a certain vintage. It's done exceptionally well though. Much as I loved 'Dracula', I thought I'd die of boredom during the interminable exchanges of letters between Lucy and Mina. 'The Express Diaries' doesn't suffer from this at all. The book remains gripping from cover to cover. Those who like the light tone of Agatha Christie novels, however, should be warned that at times the events take on a nastiness that would scare the hell out of many of her fans, and might even cause Miss Marple to drop her knitting in horror.

I intentionally haven't said much about the plot. To put it briefly, we have a collection of fascinating characters in a classic setting; mysterious cultists and a particularly nasty monster, all trying to secure all the parts of a mysterious occult statue—The Sedefkar Simulacrum—which also has the unfortunate effect of corrupting all who possess it. The concept of a race against time with evil cultists to gather the disparate parts of some means to acquire great power is by no means new, but it's particularly well-handled in this book.

The artwork by Eric M. Smith is exceptional. Apart from the cover, there are fourteen full page color illustrations, which are presented, for the most part, in sepia tones, which gives them an even more effective period feel. There are also many black and white spot illustrations, throughout the book, of letters, photographs, tickets, telegrams and other props from the story and a beautiful, colour map of the route our heroes take on the end-papers.

I recommend this book very highly. If you can afford it, buy the hardcover. I suspect it'll be quite sought after once it goes out of print.

Love the subject hate the book

Some text books are great reads. They are filled with information about the topic, include relevant examples, and explain things concisely. This book is not one of them. The information is buried in tons of redundant examples and verbose descriptions. There are also long winded real life stories that would add to the topic if the reader was not already bogged down in the overwhelming text.I never knew what a poorly written text book looked like until this semester. I saved this class for my senior year because it was the class that I most looked forward to. Having to read this book is ruining the class and taking time that could be better used studying for other classes or doing other valuable activities.

A Textbook that's Interesting

I got the Kindle "rented" version for 3 months - it's ridiculously priced to buy or to rent - obscene and they should be ashamed. That said - the book, while slow going, is absolutely fascinating. I would take this class again just to read the rest of the book that I missed!
It's updated fairly regularly every couple years it seems - I recommend it. Oh, and say goodbye to your money $ka-ching!$$
