Gene Brucker is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the Medieval Academy of America and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as a foreign member of the Dep utazione di Storia Patria per la Toscana. A fascinating bird�s eye view of Florence

The word "amateur" comes from the Italian "amare" which means to love and this is a book for anyone with an interest in and affection for Italian city states and Florence in particular. Mr. Gene Brucker is a distinguished American historian (University of California, Berkeley) with an admirable record but the book he has produced about Florence is meant for the general reader and obviously aims at sharing his passion for the quattrocento (Florence's golden age, the 15th century and beyond) with as many people as possible. The result is splendid : in seven chapters dealing with the great families, the economy, the forms of government, the Florentine dominion, the Principato, etc., the reader is taken through a pleasant voyage in history. The writing is never heavy but neither is it meant for those who give up easily : some of the chapters - on the conflicts between Guelfs and Ghibellines for instance - do require more than a passing interest in the subject. The book is lavishly illustrated and contains a number of separate "two pagers" I greatly enjoyed, which present a number of interesting topics in themselves, such as the description of a city plan, the features of a traditional Florentine palazzo, the currencies in use, the reach of Florentine trade, the guilds, Andrea del Verocchio, the geometric theory of perspective and many other topics. An admirable book, to be highly recommended.

Penned by an eminent historian, this book is superb! Very striking is Brucker's unique narrative style. He makes the readers think as if the events happened only yesterday. I strongly recommend his other works as well: You will feel enlightened. No other historian can capture the cultural richness of Florence with such delightful charm. I guarantee you'll fall in love with the city, her citizens, and this historian, Gene Adam Brucker.

About the Author
Dr. Rick Harrington has been a faculty member at the University of Houston, Victoria (UHV), since 1987. His specialty areas include health psychology/behavioral medicine and social psychology. He obtained his doctorate in social psychology and psychophysiology from the University of Texas at Arlington and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine/social psychology at the University of Houston. Dr. Harrington is a licensed psychologist who received his licensing supervision at Houston's Methodist Hospital's Institute for Preventive Medicine. He practiced psychology in Houston at the Methodist Hospital, in private practice, and also worked as a Research Associate for the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Harrington has been teaching at the college level for over 25 years and is a past recipient of UHV's Teaching Excellence Award. He has also been honored by "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" (1996, 2007) as one of the "best teachers in America selected by the best students." Dr. Harrington initiated the UHV Psi Chi chapter and is a former president of the Victoria Area Psychological Association. His research endeavors have included work in biofeedback, smoking cessation, personality, and life satisfaction.

A Must Read Whether You're in College or Not

As a psychology major with extreme stress issues, this textbook for my final class for the degree was excellent. It's insightful, helpful, and best of all? Easy to read and understand. The book give practical suggestions on how to reduce stress and explains why stress is such a huge issue in terms of overall health; mental, physical, and emotional.

I bought this book because it was required for my Psychology of Stress course and I found the material very easy to read and digest. Sometimes textbooks can be all over the place but this textbook had my reading it at easy and allowing the information sink in without much hassle. Really a stress free book!

About the Author

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she enjoys traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics�from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics�from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University–Purdue�University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit and spend time with her children.

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed�at Indiana University–Purdue University�Indianapolis (IUPUI), and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored�over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently�giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Teachers, pay heed

I'm a bit frustrated by the lack of comprehensive reviews on this textbook. Here is the plain truth about Precalculus: A Right Triangle Approach:

Although its goal is to visually engage the student, its unlabeled pseudo-math deviates from common math learning. Its examples skip over valuable procedural information, often leaving the student clueless as to how the book arrived at its answer.

For those who know and understand the math already, this book would be handy as a refresher course. Unfortunately for many confused students, this is not a book for those who are new or unfamiliar with the concepts of Precalculus.

This book is overpriced, overrated and you will find yourself using the internet as often as you use the book to fill in the gaps of information it leaves out.

Teachers, while the topics in this book will be familiar to you at first glance, please do not assign this book to your students. They have never seen Precalculus before and this book makes a terrible first impression.

Fantastic book. Love how it comes wrapped up in the packaging and stays in new condition. Never knew how deep the definition of documentation was. Good Reader for Students Learning English

The Phantom of the Opera is a popular story that many people around the world have heard of. It is well loved and has a high interest. My students have also expressed an interest in the story. I bought this book which is a simplified version of the story for students learning English. They can learn to read while enjoyed a story they already have high interest in. They enjoy it.

Cluster Analysis Crib Sheet

This is not a tutorial on the mathematics of cluster analysis nor does it have sufficient examples or depth of explanation to be used as a text. It is a guide to implementation for someone who has learned this material elsewhere, as I did from Everitt, Landau, Leese and Stahl's Cluster Analysis text.

The book begins with an overview of hierarchical, k-means and two-stage cluster analysis techniques along with the associated terms and concepts. Next is a walkthrough of how to set up a cluster analysis in SPSS and interpret the output. A simple example along with screen shots and tables of results is adequate to demonstrate the process. The book then reviews the corresponding procedures in SAS. It closes with a frequently asked questions section that includes some guidance for readers using R. The reference section is brief, but adequately stocked with books that discuss cluster analysis and related techniques in greater detail.

The author accomplishes the book's objectives well enough to make it worth a reader's time. If you are an SPSS or SAS user just learning to conduct a cluster analysis, this book is a useful addition to your reference shelf.
