A Needed Escape & Good Story

I received this story for an ARC review. I know the storyline of this book has been done before, but it was still a breath of fresh air for me. I really enjoyed it and was in need of escaping my reality into this HEA story. Lauren, the heroine in this story, was a good, strong woman who had sacrificed in life to reach the dream she had. Christina was the girl/roommate who appeared to be genuine but turned out to be drama personified. Michael was the misunderstood hero in the story, who although was an a** in the beginning of the story, ended up being a man you could admire in the end. Download a copy. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

This book was so heart felt and very emotionally charging. Mike was so emotionally scarred that Bill could still come in his life and wreak havoc. But Bill had another thing coming if he thought Lauren would simply do his bidding and let anyone hurt the love of her life. Even though Mike and Lauren had to get their personal life back on track after the disastrous way that Christina tried to keep anyone from having happiness, true love prevailed and the perfect baby was accomplished through 2 loving individuals not through artificial methods.

Unique and enjoyable romance

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this unique twist on the usual billionaire-wants-a-baby-hires-a-surrogate story line. I liked Mike and Lauren and the development of their love. The story never lagged and I read it in one sitting.

About the Author

Yolanda Murphy, previously on the faculty of Empire State College (SUNY), is retired. Robert F. Murphy was professor of anthropology at Columbia University. He was the author of many books and articles, including Headhunter's Heritage: Social and Economic Change Among the Munduruc� Indians and The Body Silent: The Different World of the Disabled, for which he won a Columbia University Lionel Trilling Award.R. Brian Ferguson, editor of the foreword, is professor of anthropology at Rutgers University―Newark. His books include The State, Identity, and Violence and Yanomami Warfare: A Political History.

Classic Study of Brazil's Mundurucu Indians

"In the morning we sat behind our house drinking coffee and watching the mists rising from the hillside in thin tendrils that were said by the Indians (who knew that it was really mist) to be the campfire of a mythical inambu bird. And the evenings often closed in brilliant, iridescent sunsets, kaleidoscopes of shifting colors. It was an enchanted land existing in a distant place and peopled by descendants of a remote age. To enter it was to step through the looking glass."

What would it be like to be a woman living in the Brazilian Amazon Basin? What if you lived in the moment, survival being a daily challenge? How would you set up your life so you had the support you needed when a man walked out of your life leaving you to care for his children? The women in the Amazon have it all figured out. In the first four pages you see the exotic beauty and undeniable reality of life.

The authors were a newly married couple when they first walked into a Mundurucu village in 1952. This book was written in the 70s and explains life from the perspective of a female anthropologist. Yolanda spent time with the women who accepted her as a friend and sister. Robert spent time with the men and learned about the ways they felt towards the women and how seriously they took their religious beliefs. This book really does include both sides, but has a definite focus on women.

This is a fascinating study of how the Mundurucu women humor the "mythically dominant" males, how they care for their men and how they survive when their marriages don't work out. It is a story about how women have found a way to survive by bonding with other women and sticking together through life.

When you read this book you realize how universal women really are. They all seem to basically want the same thing. You have to laugh when you read how the women encourage their husbands to work harder so they can buy new clothes and are even quite willing to do the work themselves. In fact, from this book, it does appear both sexes are working rather hard all day long just to survive. Afternoon naps are however a necessity because of the heat.

This story is also a beautiful look at survival. Of how men and women depend on one another to meet their basic needs. In the Mundurucu society, women and men took on various roles and responsibilities although the women tended to do most of the menial tasks and raised the children. Sound familiar? Well life is changing all over the world and by the end of this book, you can see how the Mundurucu Indians have already adapted to change.

The work of Yolanda and Robert Murphy encourages an understanding of women's lives in the non-Western world. It focuses on gender relations and the social roles women play in the Amazon forest. Yolanda explains how the women rear their children, take care of their husbands, form groups to complete tasks and keep control of their lives even in difficult situations. There are descriptions of bathing in rivers, preparing foods, gardening, feasts, childcare, rubber collection and all sorts of interesting facts about the lives of the Mundurucu people.

While I thought this book would be only focusing on the women, the second chapter surprised me with information about the land and there are a few maps. There is also plenty of information about the men and what they desire, miss about the older cultures and how they even laugh and say that the homes really do belong to the women and in some areas the men live in a "men's house." There is information about hunting trips and the crafts the men work on in their spare time.

The processing of the manioc plant will interest anyone who has ever cooked tapioca. The myths are entertaining and it was interesting to read their version of the Adam and Eve story.

A widely read and beautifully written classic study of Brazil's Mundurucu Indians.

About the Author
Gerry Stribling was born into a military family and served in the marine Corps in the 1960s and early 1970s. Since 1991 he has worked as a case manager for disabled, impoverished, homeless and criminal populations. He is the author of "Confessions of a Buddhist Gunslinger." Stribling and his wife make their home in Louisville, Kentucky.

Practical Buddhism in a conversational voice.

If you're looking for a readable introduction to the basics of Buddhism, whether for yourself or to give to others, start here. Even if you or your intended recipient is a woman -- even a feminist, like me -- this is a great starting place, as long as the reader isn't the sort to be offended by the occasional jovial mention of sex, and bodily functions.

I'll be honest, I read the first edition of this book and loved it, and gave it a good review here on amazon.com, and through that got to know the author. But our budding friendship isn't the reason I'm giving this newly updated edition a five-star review. The real reason is that it is very hard to find a book that covers all the basics so well, and until now it has been impossible to find one that is an enjoyable and quick read, to boot. But this book is all that and more.

In recent years, since I gave up my job to study Buddhism full time, I have admittedly become a stickler for the details of the dharma, as well as the Buddha's life, and especially the way he said things (because the Buddha was very precise in his use of language). As a result, I don't always agree with every word or every thought presented in this book -- I could quibble lots of details, like that he probably wasn't born *more* than 2,500 years ago; a new chronology having next year be the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddha's birth (a la Professor Gombrich of Oxford) -- but the things I'd disagree with are minor compared to the straight-to-it honesty of presenting the Buddhist path, as the author does here, as being a tough way to live a life, requiring courage and the moral backbone of a superhero. He's right, Buddhism is not for wimps. As he points out in his straight-from-the-hip style, the practice of Buddhism is humbling. "I think it's sad that people quest for spirituality because they think it will make them special, when the opposite is true: True happiness comes when you realize how special you aren't." Buddhism done right brings us right down to earth, rather than sending us soaring to metaphysical heights, and this book presents that realistic Buddhism.

The book covers the four noble truths, the eightfold path, the five precepts, and thoughts on karma and rebirth, and covers them well enough for a solid understanding of those basics, plus enough on meditation to get anyone started in actually following the practice. But the wonderful thing about this book, for me, is that it is written in very accessible language, in a natural, comfortable style and with plenty of humor. The author's stories, drawn from his experiences, bring the dharma to life. I've read -- or at least begun to read -- many books on Buddhism over the years, looking for an introduction I'd give without hesitation to friends and family, and I'm really grateful to have found this one.

Absolutely loved this book. If you're interested in Buddhism and don't feel like paging through some of the heavier publications this one's for you. Gerry Stribling breaks down the five precepts, four noble truths, eightfold path and a little history of Gautama Siddhārtha. Easy to digest and quite humorous. It's for the "dudes" who watch Caddyshack once a year. I don't and still enjoyed it tremendously.

I am female and very much enjoyed this clear, concise, very down to earth book. The author writes well and with easy humor. My teen son had been asking me for explanations that I couldn't provide to his satisfaction. I have many excellent books & other Buddhist publications that did not get the response of this small book. This is a terrific find! If you are not Buddhist, but wonder who might be & why, I doubt there exists an easier to understand, more pleasant to read option available.

“The book under review is what one would always like to have on one’s desk. It is informative, factual, well-referenced, exhaustive and extremely well illustrated. It immediately grasps one’s attention not only because it gives practical tips throughout, but also because of its rich and profuse illustrations. How richly is the book illustrated can be gauged by the fact that there are a total of more than 1800 photographs (all in full color) scattered over 671 pages of text – about 3 photographs per page!
There are some other interesting features in this book too, which set it apart from other run-of-the-mill kind of texts. One which I especially liked – and am sure, most others will like too – is a feature called “take home message”. You can read the text and cases, and then the editors will tend to drive home the point through this feature. This feature should be most useful for younger pathologists and those in training for whom this book is an absolute must.
The book is full of such practical tips throughout. To my mind the two most valuable features of this book are its rich and profuse illustrations and its practical tips. Most current books are deficient in these.
This book can be heartily recommended not only to trainees and younger pathologists, who obviously would benefit greatly from this book, but also to senior pathologists if only to re-alert them to certain common pitfalls. Certainly everyone would get to see a number of unique cases irrespective of the level of his experience.
Besides pathologists at whom this book is mainly aimed, it should also prove useful for police officers, coroners, magistrates and all other law enforcement officers. Illustrative photographs should prove useful to this section. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and this book is going to my companion for the rest of my life.”

About the Author
David Dolinak is Chief Medical Examiner for Austin, TX. He has published and lectured extensively in the neurosciences and forensic pathology. In conjunction with Evan Matshes he has produced the very well received text “Medicolegal Neuropathology: A Color Atlas.”

Evan Matshes is the Assistant Chief Medical Examiner for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has published and lectured extensively in human anatomy and osteology, the neurosciences, and forensic pathology. In addition to his aforementioned textbook publishing, he was also a co-author on “An Atlas of Human Osteology”, released in 2000 in Canada.

An amazing book

It is just unbelieveable.The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

Great book!!!!!

This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.

And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

I read this thing cover to cover and it was time well spent. Lots of high-quality full color photographs illustrating important post mortem findings. The book is organized intelligently and includes chapters that take the reader beyond the core topics of "blunt trauma" or "gunshot wounds" etc. The text is clear and easy to understand but also quite thorough. That being said, the text is not quite as comprehensive as Spitz and Fisher, and there is room for much expansion without compromising the merits of this book. A new edition appears to be coming out later this year and though the content of this first edition needs little revision, I hope it is greatly expanded.

About the Author

Ronald J. Tallarida holds a BS and MS in physics/mathematics and a Ph.D in pharmacology. His primary appointment is professor of pharmacology at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. For more than 30 years, he also served as adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where he received the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching of mathematics. He has published more than 290 works, been the recipient of NIH research grants, and served as consultant to industry and government agencies. His research interests include the mathematical modeling of biological systems, feedback control, and the action of drugs and drug combinations.
