She's called Awesomely Luvvie for a reason

Don't misunderstand the title or the "Do-Better Manual" blurb, this book is more like the love child of a no-holds-barred conversation with a good friend about all the stuff that annoys you in a room with thick walls and an irreverent memoir written by a person who has had a fascinating life. Luvvie speaks her truth and you can't help feeling like parts of it are your truth too.
I discovered Luvvie Ajayi through people I enjoy online—people who make think, make me laugh, and who help me find new perspective. Luvvie kept coming up as a voice of reason and so I'd click over to her blog and find myself in stitches at her take on everything from tv shows to politics. Her book is more of the same. She calls people out on nonsense, and she includes herself in that calling out. We can all do better, but you can't do better than this book. It's that good!

Funny? Sure. But Learn from the Many Serious Parts!

This book was recommended to me by a good friend who had thoroughly enjoyed it. She and many of the reviewers had said it was hilarious, and I agree that, especially in the early chapters it definitely is. Honestly, being a confirmed Luddite beyond a certain age, the social media chapters #were#lost#on#me. I presume to anyone under the age of, say, 50, would think those and chapters of similar content riotous. She writes very conversationally and colourfully, so the book is an easy read--although I had to look up a lot of words in an American Slag dictionary, which I didn't even know existed before a week ago.
The chapters I want to highlight, though, are those about the ugly -isms of our (and previous) times. If you are white, as I am, and male (even worse), this book should be required reading. If you are white and female, don't worry, there's a required chapter for you, too. She develops the concept of privilege between races and genders in a sobering, no-wonder-they-hate-us, exposition. It's fair to speculate that most white people have never heard the crux of racism described so eloquently. I know I hadn't. She leaves us no rocks to scuttle under, no elite liberal mantle in which to wrap ourselves. We're ants to her solar focusing glass. She's giving all of us an opportunity to understand so many things from the headlines. Take the opportunity and grow into person you can/should be.
She spears brutish, loutish men and then makes those of us who feel ourselves "evolved" as not being much better under most circumstances. Before I read the chapter about rape culture, I thought I was one of the evolved. Well, I don't any longer. But like T. S. Eliot said, "For us there is only the trying; the rest is not our business." But you really must try, and try again. Really. Try again. Really try.
She makes scathing criticisms of feminists, who she suggests are prone to acting out their privileged positions. She notes that while women make 72 cents for each dollar a man makes, the fact that a woman of colour only makes 64 cents doesn't make them automatic members of the Movement, which is almost exclusively white (her words, not mine).
The one thing that makes me craziest is right wing religious zealots who think that a god has called them to correct the errors everyone else makes. Where I may differ somewhat is in my belief that no single religion holds the trademark on hatred against other religions. There really is little difference between the extreme zealots of Islam that we in the US fear and the wingnuts of the right wing of Christianity that we should. There is little substantive difference between those trying to impose Christian Sharia on our culture and those trying to do the same thing in parts of the Middle East. Ironically, the responsible guys in both religions think it's the other ones trying to do the imposition on them. Ms Ajayi expounds at length at the evil religion has done in the name of [pick a name of] god. Those who read this review that think that they are recipients of the revealed words of any particular god would do well to read the appropriate chapter--with an open mind.
Read this book! Regardless of your background, you are almost certain to see yourself portrayed in a negative light and therefore be presented with an opportunity to grow, whether you be the guy who disappears when it's time to reconcile the restaurant bill, or the person who marginalizes people who embrace a different sexual preference than you do, or the guy who thinks any coed at a frat party is fair game. Read--and sin no more!

I’m Judging You: The Do Better Manual by Luvvie Ajayi is the book you need to read. Luvvie is the best friend that we all need in our lives. She is the one who will tell us that we are acting stupid, being played, or just need to pull it together.
In I’m Judging You, she breaks down pop culture and then hits you with the truth. She doesn’t sugarcoat the truth which I think is refreshing. The chapters about racism and rape culture were uncomfortable to read but it was needed. We need to have that dialogue about racism and rape culture.
There are moments where I was laughing at some of what she was saying but then there were moments where I felt like I was slapped with a huge dose of reality. The part about friendships really hit home with me. It still resonates long after I have finished the book. Thank you Luvvie Ajayi for hitting me with the truth that I needed to read.
I will be recommending this book to anyone and everyone. Let’s be honest, I will judge you if you don’t read it. I give it 5/5 Platypires.
