W. H. Murray (1913 - 1996) was one of Scotland's foremost climbers before World War II, putting up many new routes in mountains that were still being discovered in terms of sport. He saw active service in the war and spent several years as a prisoner of war. In later years he explored the Himalayas, continued writing about the outdoors, especially in Scotland, and became a published novelist and a leading conservationist. Robin Lloyd-Jones's biography was recognized in 2013 by the Saltire Society as its Research Book of the Year.

About the Author
Robin Lloyd-Jones is a climber, teacher, and award winning author of novels, short fiction, radio drama and non-fiction. He is a former president of the Scottish Association of Writers and of Scottish PEN. He was a tutor in creative writing at Glasgow University and was awarded an honorary fellowship of the School of Latin American Studies following his book on street children, Fallen Angels (1992).

Extraordinary life, beautifully told

What an extraordinary life this recounts. W.H. Murray lived the lives of many men - an advenurer, a prisoner of war, a conservationist. a writer and much more.
Mr. Lloyd-Jones quotes the following “pictures capture the visual splendour at one moment of time, but it is the pen that brings the scene to life when the writer knows his subject and his craft so well that he can put you there beside him” and recounts how apt it captures what his subject, W.H. Murray, achieves so splendidly. One gets the feeling that Mr. Lloyd-Jones is probably too modest to realise how apt it is for what he does himself in descriptions of both the outside world and the inner ones of thoughts and feelings.

Brilliant

Amazing work, beautifully written, a wonderful read.
This is an amazing story on a topic that very few people know of, which makes it all the more fascinating.
I highly recommend this book; in fact, it inspired me to the point that want to climb mountains.
